Must try Machas
The matcha hype is well and truly powering on and I am so here for it. Perth is overflowing with options right now, but let's be honest, a pretty cup only gets you so far. What I'm always chasing is the one that tastes as good as it looks, whether that's a smooth, earthy plain matcha, something flavoured done right or a specialty drink that genuinely surprises you. Here are the spots in Perth that are actually delivering.
Lulu Lala, Northbridge
Don't let the size fool you, this little hole in the wall punches well above its weight. Lulu Lala serves up great matcha every single visit and the menu has enough variety to keep you coming back to work your way through it. Yes, there's usually a wait, but the crowd is there for a reason and it's absolutely worth it.
Teassential, City
Teassential is situated within the State Buildings in the city, offering a range of matchas, teas, coffee and baked treats. They sell a wide variety of dried Asian teas, which I've purchased and loved drinking at home. However, my favourite is their ceremonial matcha latte - simply amazing.
Dine by Arrival Hall, Northbridge
If you haven't been paying attention to what Dine by Arrival Hall has been doing with matcha, now's the time to start. They've been consistently turning out well executed specialty drinks that change with the seasons and their new winter releases are already on my must try list.
Bar Botanik, Northbridge
Tucked inside a gorgeous plant shop is Bar Botanik, it’s such a hidden gem. They serve genuinely great matcha in a peaceful, botanical setting that makes you want to slow down and stay a while. Inside the shop is also Matcha Tomo who run matcha making classes, tasting and take home matcha. I got to watch a class in action whilst visiting and it looked like such a fun, immersive experience. I've already filed it away as a great idea for a different kind of date experience, or a fun experience to do with a fellow matcha loving friend.
20 Twenty Cafe, Northbridge
Twenty 20 is yet another small but mighty cafe, producing some quality matcha and specialty drinks as well as their viral crepe cake. Order at the wall and grab a seat in their sunny, shared courtyard to enjoy your drinks. My favourites are their Pistachio Matcha and Naughty Caramel.
Kith, Nedlands
Some places earn a permanent spot on the list and Kith is one of them. It's where my matcha obsession began a year and a half ago and returning last week was a reminder of exactly why. The strawberry matcha is still the standout and genuinely hard to beat, but their growing specialty drinks menu shows they're not done surprising us yet.
